Think Like a Machine, Learn Like a Human: AI tools that turn ideas into action

I had the opportunity to present at the Reading for the Love of It Conference in Toronto again this year. My session, “Think Like a Machine, Learn Like a Human,” explored how AI literacy, coding, and critical thinking can live together in today’s classrooms.

During this session, we unpacked what AI actually is, how machine learning works, and why students need to move beyond simply using AI to truly understanding it. We explored AI literacy, lateral reading, and how coding continues to function as a powerful language for communication, creativity, and critical thinking. Most importantly, we looked at how these ideas connect to real-world implications, ethical considerations, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

I also shared hands-on classroom activities and practical strategies educators can use to help students question AI, think critically about the information it generates, and use it as a thought partner rather than a shortcut.

You can access the presentation slides below to explore the ideas, activities, and resources shared during the session.
